Hot Pink

I know it has been rather quiet on my blog lately. Work has been very busy and I generally haven't felt very 'photograph-y' lately, hence the lack of new material.

A project I am meaning to undertake this fall and winter is to go through all my old photos (starting back in 2003, when I got my first camera) and make a selection of photo's to print. After all, isn't that what photography is about, recording memories for posterity? Okay, that may be putting it dramatically. But having a bunch of enormous files with umpteen versions of the same photo to find just the right framing aren't exactly handy to flick through in search of some happy memories or a few images to illustrate a story from the old days. Hence, project 'selection & cleanup'. I'll be posting some of the old photos as I go through them.

Going through my old photo's randomly a few days ago, I bumped into this one, taken in Berlin in January 2009.

A Berlin metro station is colored hot pink by musical bulletins announcing Dirty Dancing, The Musical. I was shocked by all the pink - I guess that's why they call it shocking pink - or is that just me? The commuters, however, don't appear to let it bother them.

On track

This picture was taken in October 2009 on the train from Rotterdam to Brussels. I was making random pics of the sunset landscape from the train window. Only later did I notice that a fellow passenger was hiding in the shadows, staring out at same sights as me. A penny for his thoughts.

Sunset Palette

Another oldie, this picture from December 2008. I took it in Nieuwpoort, at the Belgian coast, from the balcony of a friend's apartment. The setting sun paints the sky in luscious shades of purple and red, and lights up the water on the sand. By contrast, the lampposts cast an orange light, glowing off the pavement, transforming the promenading people into shadow puppets. The Christmas tree on the first lamppost hints at the time of year.

Bella Italia

I took this picture in 2004, while on holiday in Florence with my boyfriend. I like how it captures the atmosphere at dusk in an Italian city: the fading daylight giving way to shades of blue, people sitting around passing time before dinner, adding a splash of colour to the scenery with their outfits. The vespa passing by was a stroke of luck, adding movement to the picture.
